Why I Joined Forces With the boring digital co.

Why I Joined Forces With the boring digital co.

An agency owner’s perspective on building the part of digital work that too often gets skipped.

I didn’t join the boring digital co. because I wanted to start another agency.

I already had one.

For years, I’ve worked directly with clients on websites, e-commerce, development, search, email, and the less glamorous operational work that keeps all of those things connected. I know what it is to inherit a site that looks finished but isn’t technically sound. I know what it is to be asked for more traffic when the basic search setup is still broken. And I know how often a business owner has been sold a new service before anyone has taken the time to look at what is already there.

That last part is what made the boring digital co. feel different to me.

Most of the work is search. the boring digital co. helps professional businesses become easier to find through local SEO, technical SEO, Google Business Profile work, and the pages and business information that support all three. That increasingly includes AI-assisted and agentic search, too: making sure newer systems can understand the same basic facts about a business that Google and its customers need. The agency is based in San Diego, though the work itself is not confined to one market.

Most businesses do not need more noise.

Agency work has a predictable problem: we tend to recommend the thing we sell. Web agencies recommend a rebuild. Social agencies recommend more content. Ad agencies recommend a larger media budget. Sometimes those answers are right. Sometimes they are simply the next item on the menu.

The business owner is left trying to compare proposals that solve different problems, all written as if they are urgent.

In my own work, I’ve always been more interested in the connective tissue. Is the site easy to use? Can Google actually understand it? Do the pages answer the questions real customers are asking? Are the listings accurate? Does the lead go somewhere useful once it arrives? If one of those pieces is missing, adding another campaign usually creates more activity, not a better result.

the boring digital co. starts there. Look at what exists. Name the actual problem. Build what is needed. Maintain what is worth keeping. It sounds obvious. In practice, it is surprisingly rare.

Workspace of the boring digital co. in San DiegoThe name is a little tongue-in-cheek. The work isn’t.

“Boring” does not mean bland work or low ambition. It means we are willing to care about the parts nobody posts in a launch carousel: clean site structure, fast load times, accurate business information, useful pages, sensible tracking, and reporting a client can understand without a glossary.

Those things are not exciting until they are missing.

A broken redirect is boring. So is a duplicate listing, an unindexed service page, or a contact form that quietly stopped sending. But those details can be the difference between being found and being invisible. They can also be the difference between a business trusting its marketing and assuming none of it works.

I have spent enough time inside client accounts to know that the unglamorous work is often the work that matters most. The name says that out loud.

Why join forces instead of staying separate?

Because good independent work still has limits.

Michael, Jack and Jonathan, partners at the boring digital co.

I’m joining Michael and Jack, the other two partners in the business. Each of us comes at the work from a different angle, which is part of the value. The goal is not to add more voices for the sake of it. It is to catch more of what one person working alone can miss.

Running my own agency taught me how to move quickly, solve problems without a lot of theatre, and stay close to the client. It also showed me the value of having more than one experienced person in the room. A developer can see the technical problem. A strategist can see the positioning problem. Someone who has operated the system after launch can see where a promising plan is likely to fall apart.

the boring digital co. brings those views together without pretending to be an agency that does everything. Search foundations, brand roadmaps, and senior marketing guidance are the core. Websites and ongoing support are added when the work calls for them. Paid media, large-scale social, or specialist PR can go to trusted partners when that is the right next step.

That boundary matters to me. A client should not have to buy whatever happens to be most profitable for the agency that answered the phone.

What I’m bringing with me.

I’m not walking away from the experience I built before Boring. I’m bringing it into a larger working system.

That includes the practical side of development: building and repairing sites, managing the handoff between design and implementation, understanding e-commerce and email systems, and making sure the finished work can actually be maintained. It also includes the operational side—scope, timelines, client communication, and the hundred small decisions that determine whether a project feels calm or chaotic.

My role is to help turn strategy into work that ships, and to make sure the pieces keep making sense together once they do.

For existing clients and collaborators, this is an expansion of what I can bring to the table, not a disappearing act. The relationships and standards that shaped my earlier work are coming with me. There is simply more depth behind them now.

The part I believe in most.

The strongest reason I joined is also the simplest: the boring digital co. is comfortable saying “enough.”

Enough pages. Enough tools. Enough reporting. Enough work for this phase.

That does not mean thinking small. It means finishing the right job before inventing the next one. Every engagement should have a clear scope and a defined end. Ongoing work should continue because there is something useful to maintain or improve, not because a retainer renewed quietly in the background.

That is how I have wanted agency work to feel for a long time: direct, accountable, and useful. Less performance around the work. More attention to the work itself.

What comes next.

I’ll continue working at the intersection of development, search, digital operations, and client delivery—now as part of the boring digital co.

We are building foundations for professional businesses that are excellent at what they do but harder to find online than they should be. We look before we prescribe. We explain the work plainly. We fix what matters and leave the rest alone.

It may not be the loudest pitch in the room. That is the point.

Let the work do the talking.
